Tips for Visual Notetaking – drawing is learning!

If there’s one thing that would have made studying in university easier for me – was taking more notes with pictures.

They’re called sketchnotes – or ‘visual note taking’. It’s drawing + studying = to learn and remember information.

Here’s a free download for you – quick handout to get you started using visuals in your notes. Right-click or drag the image to your desktop to save it.

Thanks to the fantastic, energetic students in UBC’s Jumpstart program who were in class today. They’re starting off their journey as first-year university students. In two short hours, we explored how to make sketchnotes while listening to someone, and when you’re taking notes from a textbook.

A student today asked a great question: when you’re listening, how do you know when a prof says something important? Well, if they say it more than once (and especially if they say it 2 or 3 times), then it’s definitely important.  And what if you miss something? it’s okay, just move on. Share your notes with a friend in class to fill in the gaps later.

If you’re looking for more inspiration, Flickr is a great resource: search Sketchnote. You’ll see people are sketchnoting at conferences, work meetings, and in tons of locations outside the classroom. It’s contagious!

Good luck Jumpstarters!

I made this digital sketchnote on the ipad with the Bamboo Paper app. I’m trying out new digital tools these days …
